LOVESTRUCk
Lovestruck: A
Romantic Comedy set in the Horrific World of H.P. Lovecraft is exactly what
its long-winded title purports it to be. Drawing on elements from 3 classic
short stories by legendary psychological-horror auteur H.P. Lovecraft, the play
wrenches the themes of The Dunwich Horror, The Rats in the Walls, and
The Call of Cthulhu from their comfy horror setting, and thrusts them
boldly into the blood-curdling realm of romantic comedy.
Victor Crancy, a journalist researching paranormal phenomena, is drawn into perilous events concerning the mysterious occult tome known as the Necronomicon. Meanwhile, a naïve flower-girl, Tammy Lancaster, develops a crush on Victor. Embodying the very cliché of blind love, all Tammy can think about is how to get Victor’s attention, even if it means inadvertently bringing about the apocalypse. Staying true to its Lovecraftian inspiration, the play also steps beyond its comedy to explore the eccentricities and self-delusional nature of the human mind.
Enlightenment Theatre and the seductive David Benedict Brown are producing the
play, which stages June 8-16 at the Dorothy Somerset Studio, UBC. For directions
and tickets peruse the menu on your left.
Lovestruck was written by Andrey Summers, and directed by Gord Myren, but
obviously without H.P. Lovecraft, none of this fun could possibly be had. To him
we owe our truest thanks.
